Photo Competition for Seafarers 2025

38 seafarers in this year's Danish photo competition

The winners of the 2025 photo competition for seafarers have been announced. In 2025, 38 seafarers submitted 187 photos to the photo competition. The judges for the competition were Royal Arctic Line skipper Kim Eggers, photography teacher Jens Kostrup, and photographer Olle Thorup.

The competition has four categories: Photo of the Year, Life on Board, Nature, and The Maritime Environment. In addition, a photo that stands out in the judges' opinion is chosen.

The judges were pleased with this year's selection of photos, stating:

"This year's selection of photos is better than last year's. There are lots of great photos from Greenland.
One of the criteria we used to select this year's winners was whether the viewer could imagine the story behind the photo.
If you can't place a photo in your own world, it doesn't matter. When you look at this year's winning photos, you become interested in what happened before and after.
This year, we have also seen an exciting black-and-white photo, which is wonderful!

SEA HEALTH & WELFARE thanks all participants for the great photos, which are available on the website. We hope the photos will inspire others to participate in the 2026 competition, for which you can already submit photos. Soon, you will be able to upload photos for the competition directly from our website. Until then, you are welcome to send us photos in the usual way. Read how to submit photos here .

Below are the winning photos with the judges' comments.

The prize for Photo of the Year is a gift worth DKK 4.000 sponsored by The Danish Maritime Fund.

We share all photos with the foundation which uses the photos on their website and other social media.

Photo of the Year in The Danish Photo Competition for Seafarers 2025

Photographer: Electrical officer, Jmaurr Go, TORM DULCE
Title: "The Man"

With “The Man,” we visit the machine.
There is something wrong with the mechanics.
Does he look it up in a manual or call the chief mechanic? There is a pause.
The orange boiler suit and black interior provide a dramatic contrast.
The highlighted nuts on the left side of the image emphasize “size.”
The radio lying on the floor adds to the sense of drama without exaggeration.

Title: "Ice house in Tassiussaq"

Photographer: Chief Officer Mark Dalgaard Nielsen, ORASILA

The image is a fantastic example of the encounter between humans and nature. The dimensions are violent/frightening, but very descriptive for viewers without much knowledge of Greenlandic nature and life in the Arctic.

Prize: A gift worth DKK 1,000

Winner of the category The Maritime Environment
Title: "SIUANA ARCTICA in Innaarsuit"

Photographer: Master Poul Hansen, SIUANA ARCTICA

At the front, in front, forward.
The image is a good example of Greenlandic traffic and the challenges it entails.
Very good contrasting colors and good composition.
The left side shows man's ability to face nature, which stands untouched on the right.

Prize: A gift worth DKK 1,000

We asked Flemming how he takes photos, and this is what he answered:

Where was your picture taken?
In the Baltic Sea.

Why did you take the photo?
I just saw a great subject.

Did you expect to win an award?
I was hoping to be considered as I thought it was a great picture myself.

How often do you take photos? / What type of camera do you use?
I take a lot of pictures. Unfortunately, my normal camera is broken, so this was taken with my iPhone 12 Mini.

Winner of the category "The Joker" - the photo that stands out
The title: "Pink Umbrella"

Photographer: Electrical Officer Jmaurr Go, TORM DULCE

Life at sea can be messy...
“Pink umbrella” is a wonderful example of this.
The colors are messy, the tools are messy, and it's all topped off with a pink umbrella—it couldn't be less maritime.
But first and foremost, life at sea is characterized by camaraderie and cooperation.
This picture is a good example of that.
