Retired, successful business woman, Harriet Lauler (Shirley MacLaine), wants to control everything around her until the bitter end -- and so she decides to write her own obituary to make sure her life story is told her way. But when Anne Sherman (Amanda Seyfried), a young newspaper reporter, is assigned to the task, she refuses to follow Harriet's script and insists on finding out the true facts about her life. The pair set out to uncover the ups and downs of Harriet's life. What begins as a contentious relationship, becomes a reawakening of passions for Harriet, and a life-altering friendship for Anne.
